Celebrating Women’s History Month: Meet Mary Kieley of Traffic Plan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – March 9, 2022 – For Women’s History Month, we’re taking time to celebrate women and reflect on their contributions throughout history and to our energy industry. The dedication, leadership, and hard work of women is abundantly evident in everything we do. As one of Southeast Virginia’s largest economic engines, the commitment of Virginia Natural Gas to support the needs of the small business community across Hampton Roads, including diverse, veteran, minority, and women-owned businesses, is as strong as ever and continues to grow.

These partnerships are yet another significant step in our work to foster a diverse and inclusive community, and work to make sure they have the tools necessary to become a supplier to the company. Like Traffic Plan, a women-owned business headquartered in Central New Jersey.

The mother-and-daughter-in-law team of Carolyn and Mary Kiely founded Traffic Plan in 2012 after seeing the need to help local law enforcement safely direct traffic around road construction sites and fill a void left by the departure of a company that had previously provided those services.

Starting out with only three vans and six employees, the women-owned business has grown to more than 500 employees throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, providing roadway flagging services and traffic safety equipment for rent or sale.

The company began working with Southern Company Gas and Virginia Natural Gas in 2016 after being invited to attend the Supplier Diversity Development Program, which, according to Mary Kiely, proved to be a great learning experience and helped them expand their diversity initiatives. While they began with MOT traffic plans, flagging jobs, and lane closures in Virginia, the ongoing partnership with Southern Company has helped them expand the scope and location of their jobs.

“Our six-year relationship with Southern Company Gas has proven to be beneficial in many ways,” said Mary Kiely. “Traffic Plan has grown and expanded into new territories and been able to open new doors for our employees. We look forward to a continued relationship with Southern Company Gas, one of our valued partners in progress, and we welcome the opportunity to grow into new markets.”
