Do a lap around your property. Can you see your natural gas meter? If not, some light sweeping might be in order.
When the snow is coming down, it’s easy to forget all about your hardworking, trusty meter. But it’s very important that you keep it clean and clear of snow – for two key reasons:
- Emergency access. A meter hidden from view can slow personnel during an emergency.
- Equipment damage. As sturdy and reliable as natural gas equipment is, winter can be tough, too. Heavy snow or ice buildup can put unnecessary strain on your meter pipes and regulator.
What’s the best way to keep your meter clear? A broom. The gentle bristles of a broom should be more than adequate for removing snow. As tempting as it might be, NEVER USE A SHOVEL.
And if ice is building up, either let it melt naturally or call us for assistance. Chipping at ice on a meter can damage equipment. But you *can* remove icicles above the equipment if it seems to be dripping and refreezing on your meter.
