Project approval advances efforts to enhance reliability while minimizing impacts on customers and surrounding communities
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – March 4, 2026 – Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) announced today that the Virginia State Corporation Commission has issued a Final Order approving the Company’s request for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the Chesapeake Compressor Station. The Commission’s decision affirms the need for the project and recognizes its value to customers and the communities VNG serves.
In its order, the Commission found the project is needed to maintain reliability and resiliency across VNG’s fuel delivery system. The Commission also noted that the Chesapeake Compressor Station provides a significantly lower cost option compared with the alternatives considered, resulting in fewer impacts to customer bills.
The Commission acknowledged the project’s thoughtful design, including the use of electric-driven compressors, co-location on existing utility facilities and measures to reduce visual, sound and emissions impacts. The order also highlighted VNG’s comprehensive environmental justice review and community outreach efforts, concluding that the Company appropriately carried out the Commonwealth’s environmental justice policy.
“We appreciate the Commission’s careful review and its acknowledgment of the need for this project,” said Shannon Pierce, president and CEO of Virginia Natural Gas. “The Chesapeake Compressor Station is designed to strengthen reliability for customers and support long-term fuel resiliency in our region. This investment helps ensure customers have safer, more dependable service they can count on every day. We are grateful for the work our teams have done in partnership with regulators, community members and stakeholders to develop a project that aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.”
