Virginia Natural Gas Foundation invests $100,000 in Hampton Roads HBCUs
Two $50,000 gifts will support engineering scholarships and previously unmet needs at Hampton University and Norfolk State University
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – October 9, 2025 – The Virginia Natural Gas Foundation is investing $100,000 to support engineering programs and address critical student needs at Hampton University and Norfolk State University. In early October, each school received $50,000 to enhance scholarships in their engineering departments and help meet their highest areas of unmet need.
Together, Hampton University and Norfolk State University contribute more than $800 million in annual economic impact to Hampton Roads, serving as vital engines of opportunity, innovation and workforce development. These centers of learning not only educate future leaders but also enrich the region’s cultural and civic life, supporting thousands of jobs and driving long-term economic growth.
Virginia Natural Gas presented the checks during the annual Battle of the Bay football game between Hampton and Norfolk State on Oct. 4. The game is a celebrated tradition in the region and a fitting moment to honor the legacy and impact of both institutions.

University leaders say the funding will help expand access to education and drive innovation in Hampton Roads.

Newman, chief advancement officer at Hampton University. “This investment directly supports our mission of preparing students to be leaders by providing vital scholarships and resources for our engineering programs. This partnership is a testament to the community’s belief in our students’ potential and will make a tangible difference in their academic journeys.”
Norfolk State University President Javaune Adams-Gaston said she is appreciative of the partnership with Virginia Natural Gas. In addition to the recent gift, Adams-Gaston said the company has a history of supporting the institution by providing internships and employment opportunities for Spartans.
“Norfolk State University is a hub of excellence, innovation and endless potential,” Adams-Gaston said. “This gift will increase our capacity to provide access and support to current and future cohorts of engineering students.”
This latest investment from the Virginia Natural Gas Foundation builds on a longstanding commitment by Virginia Natural Gas to both institutions. Since 2020, Norfolk State University has received more than $400,000 and Hampton University more than $600,000 for scholarships, technology upgrades, student-focused initiatives and other critical needs.
