At Virginia Natural Gas, we are committed to safely and reliably providing natural gas to the communities we serve. As part of this commitment, we have established the Steps to Advance Virginia’s Energy (SAVE) program, a pipeline modernization initiative aimed at renewing existing natural gas infrastructure to enhance the integrity, reliability and safety of our pipeline system. Through these SAVE projects, aging pipes are replaced with new ones that are more durable, reduce methane emissions and are less expensive to maintain.

Project Details

The Walnut/Fox Hill Rd. SAVE project will involve some temporary lane closures on Fox Hill Rd., a four-lane street, with the two center lanes occasionally closed for construction. Roadwork will take place daily between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (subject to change). While this may affect traffic flow, especially during busy school times, we’re working to keep things moving as smoothly as possible. Some travel delays might occur during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, and access to neighborhoods will be adjusted for everyone’s safety and convenience. Please be mindful when traveling near construction areas and keep an eye out for posted detour signs, especially those noting changes to left turns.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we partner together to make lasting improvements for the community.

Scheduled Road Closure Overview

As part of our continued efforts to improve local infrastructure, upcoming road work for this project will take place in three phases along Fox Hill Rd., with each phase anticipated to last around several months.

We’re dedicated to keeping our residents and businesses informed ahead of any construction that may affect daily travel. During this time, we kindly encourage you to explore alternate routes and allow a bit of extra time for your commute.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will Phase 1 of the project be complete?

Project timelines are estimates based on current known conditions at the time.  Significant winter weather and other factors have resulted in Phase 1 of the project taking longer than anticipated but we are expecting it to be completed by early June.  The main line has been installed on this portion of Fox Hill Road and once the service lines to homes and businesses are installed and connected to the main line, we will patch the road and shift to the next phase of the project.  Please monitor your neighborhood’s Nextdoor feed for additional updates on our work schedule, traffic control adjustments and future paving.

Why have there been adjustments to the lane closure for Phase 1? Will there be more?

To ensure traffic can safely travel through the area, traffic control measures have been removed at times in anticipation of winter weather to assist with road plowing if necessary. Service lines feeding customers located on Fox Hill Road were also in need of replacement, causing further adjustments to the lane closure for construction. Additional lane closures will eventually be needed so crews can safely connect the new service lines to the main line.

Why aren’t construction crews working all the time?

There are several factors that impact the construction work dates and times including severe weather, permitted work days/hours, engineering adjustments that may need approval and pipeline testing.

When will the road be fully restored and paved?

Once each phase of the project is completed, we will return to mill and repave the lanes where construction took place. Until then, we are using hot patches to restore the road after each section is completed. Please monitor your neighborhood’s Nextdoor feed for additional updates on our paving schedule.

How can I get additional updates on the project?

We encourage you to monitor your local Nextdoor feed for updates as the project progresses. Please contact Virginia Natural Gas with any questions or concerns at G2VNGCustomerCare@southernco.com or 866-229-3578.
