Virginia Natural Gas provides natural gas appliance safety tips
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Oct. 9, 2016 – Virginia Natural Gas has crews in place to address any natural gas emergency caused by Hurricane Matthew. Due to the significant flooding in coastal and low-lying areas, Virginia Natural Gas is reminding customers of the following recommended guidelines to ensure their safety around natural gas appliances.
- If natural gas appliances are under water, customers are advised not to operate their appliances until they have been inspected by a qualified plumber or heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professional to conduct a safety inspection. For information on qualified natural gas contractors, call Energy Connections at 800.427.8876 or visit www.virginianaturalgas.com/DealerLocator.aspx.
- If customers’ natural gas meters or appliances have been underwater, customers should report it to the Virginia Natural Gas Customer Care Center at 866.229.3578.
- If customers smell gas, immediately leave the affected area and call the Virginia Natural Gas 24-hour emergency response line, at 877.572.3342 from a safe location. Never try to identify the source of a leak. Virginia Natural Gas wants to ensure customers that their natural gas service will be restored in a prompt manner once flood water recedes and it is safe for Virginia Natural Gas personnel to enter homes or businesses.
