The company is based in Norfolk. Virginia Natural Gas continues to be one of the fastest growing natural gas distribution companies in the country and is known for its outstanding customer service.
Our History
| 1850 |
City Gas Light Company received a charter to illuminate the streets of Norfolk with gas lights. |
| 1900s |
Through many consolidations and mergers, the company eventually became part of Virginia Power (formerly Vepco and currently Dominion Virginia Power). |
| 1982 |
The company's gas business was intermingled with electric operations. Management separated the two operations and created Virginia Natural Gas as a separate division of Virginia Power. |
| 1986 |
VNG became a separate subsidiary of the Richmond-based Dominion Resources, Inc. (DRI). The reorganization provided greater management focus, specialization and concentration of effort to gas operations that had been constrained by the integrated organizational concept. |
| 1990 |
Consolidated Natural Gas Company acquired VNG from its former parent company, DRI. The VNG operations continued with the same name, management team and practices, but with the significant advantages of affiliation with a large and highly regarded gas company. |
| 2000 |
The new millennium brought a new owner for VNG: AGL Resources Inc., an Atlanta-based energy holding company. |
