Meter Reading
About Meter Reading
Virginia Natural Gas reads residential, commercial and some industrial meters monthly. A monthly meter reading provides accurate data, ensuring that customers are paying for the exact amount of natural gas they use, not an estimated amount. In the event that the meter is not read, the customer will receive a system-generated bill, which is calculated by considering past usage and adjusting it for exact weather conditions. If a system-generated bill is incorrect, any over or under charge will be corrected the following month. That way, you will still be billed only for the gas you actually use.
Should you have any questions on concerns about meter reading, please contact call 1-866-229-3578.
Automated Meter Reading
In support of our commitment to quality customer service, Virginia Natural Gas will install automated meter reading (AMR) devices on customers’ natural gas meters over the next several months.
The AMR technology will allow Virginia Natural Gas to read your meter remotely; however, we may need access to your property occasionally for maintenance. AMR cuts down on meter re-reads and the need to estimate bills.
Most customers will not have to be home when a Virginia Natural Gas employee comes to install the AMR device. If your natural gas meter is not easily accessible, we will contact you or a door hanger will be left at your residence with a number to call at your convenience to make an appointment for installation.
Note that installation is free and does not require the interruption of gas service unless it is determined that meter replacement is necessary.
How Does It Work?
A small, battery-powered radio transmitter is installed on the natural gas meter. Once the transmitter is installed, we will be able to read your meter from a special handheld or vehicle device.
A meter reader walks by your home or a vehicle drives by with the device that receives a signal from the transmitter with the meter reading data. Once the data is collected, it is processed through our billing system.
How to Read Your Meter
Read only those dials with numbers, starting from the left. If the arrow is between numbers, read the lesser number (the number 9 is less than 0).

The reading for this example is 2984.
Don’t Hesitate: Ask to see a Company Photo ID
If a meter reader approaches your property, don't hesitate to ask to see their company photo ID. If you're in doubt about the identity of someone coming to your home, call us at 1-866-229-3578. If you feel threatened, call 911.
