Virginia Natural Gas breaks ground on Compression Station in Charles City CountyCritical piece of the Hampton Roads Crossing Project brings stable, competitively priced gas supply to customers February 9, 2009
Charles City County, Va. – February 9, 2009 – Virginia Natural Gas, a subsidiary of AGL Resources [NYSE AGL], broke ground today on a compression station in the Chambers Road area of Charles City County. The compression station is part of the Hampton Roads Crossing (HRX) natural gas pipeline, which will connect two previously non-contiguous northern and southern pipeline systems operated by Virginia Natural Gas by crossing the Hampton Roads harbor.
This is an exciting day for Virginia Natural Gas and for the region,” said Jodi Gidley, president, Virginia Natural Gas. “This project will add much-needed reliability, enhance the region’s growing energy infrastructure and provide local economic benefits.”
Compression stations act as relay stations along natural gas pipeline routes and house the equipment and machinery necessary to increase the pressure to push gas through the pipeline. The compression stations are designed to operate quietly, efficiently and with very minimal impact to the environment and surrounding community. The facility will include state-of-the-art control and safety features, including around the clock monitoring.
The compression station being built in Charles City County is a critical piece of the Hampton Roads Crossing pipeline. The State Corporation Commission of Virginia directed Virginia Natural Gas to develop the HRX pipeline project in August 2006 and approved compressors in May 2008.The HRX project is comprised of a 21-mile transmission pipeline connecting Dominion Transmission supply from Newport News into Norfolk, a city gate station at the termination point in Norfolk and two upstream pipeline compression facilities located in Caroline and Charles City counties. As part of this development project, Virginia Natural Gas will also increase deliveries of natural gas to the Dominion Transmission Ladysmith Power Station on Cedon Rd in Caroline County and to Columbia Gas of Virginia at multiple locations between Fredericksburg and Portsmouth. The project is due to be completed with initial deliveries of gas by November, 2009. Additional project details can be found on the company’s Web site at www.virginianaturalgas.com.
